Finding Food Freedom

Earlier this week I wrote a post on instagram about how I have been enjoying ALL of the fall goodies this season. Donuts, cupcakes, cookies…I was craving all things pumpkin!

Now, I know how HARD it can be to overthink sugar when it comes to balancing your hormones (and gut). And, when I’m working with my clients, we talk a lot about what it means to balance your blood sugar and how refined sugar and carbs can really hurt our delicate hormonal balance…BUT… I’ve also found that there is a beautiful balance.

I had this realization this past week:

The mental stress I used to cause myself over eating sugar was actually MORE harmful to my body than eating the sugary treat in the first place.

Yep. You read that right.

Our thoughts are POWERFUL and they create some serious chemical reactions in the body. When we feel stressed or worried, our body goes into “fight or flight” mode to prime us and protect us from danger. Releasing a lot of the hormones (excess adrenaline and cortisol) that we are trying calm down in the FIRST place!

Worrying about a tasty dessert is definitely setting off the false stress alarm 😉 And we don’t need any of that.

So, what do you do?

Personally, I try to listen to my body by enjoying and honoring my cravings. But I also make sure the ingredients in a specific item aren’t triggering for my system. A lot of times that means looking for gluten-free and dairy-free bites with natural forms of sugar. BUT… if I am out with friends or my husband, and I want to enjoy the dessert at hand (regardless of ingredients), THAT’S OK TOO.

If you’re working to keep your body in balance the majority of the time, enjoying a cupcake isn’t going to ruin all your efforts. I promise.

I also want to let you know that if you recognize that your body ISN’T feeling sugar…. you have every single right do say “no thanks,” too. And not feel bad about it.

When we choose to honor our cravings, and enjoy the foods that fill us up on a soul level, our bodies thank us.

When we choose to restrict ourselves, and place “good” or “bad” labels on food, we end up craving those items even MORE. It’s our brain’s silly way of dealing with restriction and strict limitations. It just isn’t sustainable. Period.

This type of mindset causes our system to panic, over exert energy, and release all the crazy stress hormones. These situations also prompt us to binge and overeat (which is not so great for our hormonal and gut health) and leaves us feeling guilty after.

So the next time you’re worried about “ruining” your hormone and gut balancing procols… don’t.

If it will make you feel AMAZING to enjoy that pumpkin spice donut…DO IT. And know that you’re nourishing your body (and soul) just the same 🙂

I know from personal experience that allowing yourself to enjoy the experience is never wasted. And it DOES NOT mean you’re going to go down a slippery road of eating all of the sugary things. In fact, it helps you find balance and give your the power to choose when you want to honor those sweet tooth cravings or not.

Try out the two recipes below for some delcious and fall inspired goodies!

These are so soft and pumpkin-spicy. The recipe was from @raiasrecipes. I also added some Further Food collagen.
