Even if you don’t identify as having digestive discomfort or distress, your gut may be the source of a host of other symptoms in the body. But how do you know?
From belly pain, to skin and mood issues, to hormone imbalances … let’s touch on a why our bellies are so important!
Digestion (duh, but here me out…)
New and emerging research keeps coming back to the gut and it’s crucial role in supporting all areas of the body. The most obvious function is, of course, digestion.
Digestion keeps us alive. It supplies us with energy by absorbing the powerful nutrients from our food and it provides us with the resources we need to rebuild our cells and tissues.
Without a strong digestive system, our body literally cannot function.
Even if you’re eating the “perfect’ diet, if your gut isn’t absorbing the nutrients from all those fruits and veggies, it’s not going to optimally support your system.
If you find that you’re constantly feeling exhausted, anxious, or mentally drained … it might be that your belly isn’t absorbing and digesting the nutrients from your delicious diet. Even if you feel no physical pain or discomfort at all.
Another crucial role of our digestive system is in the detoxification process.
Our bodies are put under so much environmental stress. From the toxins in our food and in the air, to the chemicals we use to “clean” our homes … our bodies take on A LOT.
Luckily for us, our gut (and our liver), has the important job of helping us detox all of these toxins. Helping us to reduce the stress and negative effects they cause in the body.
In addition to environmental toxins, the gut helps us to eliminate excess hormones (such as estrogen or cortisol) helping to balance our endocrine system. If you’re struggling with PMS, infertility, “adrenal fatigue,” (medically known as HPA axis dysfunction), or any other other hormone related imbalances… you may want to look into the gut.
I know first hand what it feels like to have moods that are ALL over the place. It feels like you just aren’t yourself. Situations that you could otherwise handle with ease seem to be monumental! You might find yourself asking… what in the world is going on with me?!
Well, it might be your gut.
Our gut microbiome (all of the trillions of bacteria living in our gut) control a host of functions in the body. One of them being our moods. These little bugs create essential building blocks including vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, and neurotransmitters (ex: serotonin, GABA, dopamine), to name a few.
These neurotransmitters control A LOT. They are our “feel good” chemicals, they control the reward center in the brain, and they help us feel calm and safe.
When we are dealing with gut dysbiosis, (an imbalance in the good and bad bacteria in your system), the essential building blocks that help support your mood struggle.

As with EVERYTHING in the body, one imbalance can directly affect all other major systems in the body.
When you’re dealing with unwanted symptoms, it is important to remember that spot treating the issues can only reduce your discomfort, not heal the underlying issue.
It’s important to get to the root of why you symptoms are manifesting in the first place. The gut is a great place to start!
